Basler Carnival Waggis

Waggis Lachenmeier Farben

The classic Waggis is a traditional Basel Carnival figure meant to represent an Alsatian vegetable farmer: blue shirt, white trousers, red scarf, oversized white shirt collar, large wooden clogs, and sometimes a pointed cap (worn when the mask is not worn). The mask is usually a blond wig made of yellow raffia. It is accompanied by a rosette in the tricolor colors, a net filled with vegetables, and possibly a massive leg bone or a similar wooden club. The traditionally red nose alludes to excessive wine consumption. Over time, the nose and teeth have become increasingly monstrous.
